PHY 130--College Physics 1--Spring--2022 Instructor: Valeri Petkov, Professor in Physics Introduction: This course is the first semester of a year-long sequence intended for life science and liberal arts majors. The sequence also fulfills the physics requirement for pre-professional programs in the medical sciences. Physics 130 is not suitable for most science (e.g. Physics, Chemistry etc) majors. An associated laboratory sequence PHY 170 is available. The lab course (PHY 170) is not required for PHY 130. However, it may be required for your academic program. Text: College Physics, 11th Edition (R. A. Serway and Ch. Vuille) + WebAssign Access Card/Code for the same text (e.g. multi-term ISBN 9781337741620). The text is available at the CMU Bookstore and is bundled with a WebAssign access card/code. If you purchase the book from another source it is your responsibility to make sure it comes with the WebAssign access card/code. Course Format: This course will be taught in a face-to-face mode. If/when necessary, we will switch to teaching the class on-line. The homework assignments are on-line. Use of Webex: If taught on-line, this course will utilize the WebEx online software to deliver real-time lectures and hold office hours. Communication and collaboration within the online environment can be greatly enhanced through the use of a headset with a microphone. It is strongly recommended that you purchase a combo headset microphone for active participation in this class. To verify that your own system meets the Webex requirements, visit Webex System Requirements. Some more instructions specific to the use of Webex in this course will posted on Blackboard. Use of Blackboard - Blackboard requires specific hardware and software to ensure adequate performance and connectivity. Use of a desktop or laptop computer with a wired internet connection is strongly recommended because mobile devices with a wireless connection are less stable and more likely to drop off. To verify that your own system meets the Blackboard requirements, visit Blackboard Browser Check page Comprehensive Lecture notes are available on-line (in Adobe PDF-format). To access them, go to http://people.cst.cmich.edu/petko1vg/Phy130_SP22.html, look over the posted Course calendar and Click on ID number of the lecture/Book chapter we will cover in class, or on line, the particulr day of Spring semester. For your convenience, the lecture/Chapter IDs appear underlined. Homework: Homework assignments, 13 in number, will be on-line at www.webassign.net. The deadline for submitting the HW is firm as announced in the Course calendar below. Registration for the on-line HW: To register you will need a valid e-mail address and an access code for WebAssign. The code may have been packaged with your new text purchased at the CMU bookstore. Otherwise, you may have to purchase it upon registration at www.webassign.net/. Upon registration, you will be asked for the Class Key. It is: cmich 0905 9192 Registration steps: i) go to www.webassign.net, ii) use your WebAssign access code to register as a student, iii) choose a Login name to obtain a Password, iv) join our course using the class ID: cmich 0905 9192. Only if legitimate circumstances cause you to miss one of the exams, and you notify me of your predicament, then this missed exam will not be counted when your final grade is determined. Even under these strict conditions, you may miss only one exam. Exam Difficulty: The exams will be hard yet fair. Expect averages between 50% and 70%. Grades: The grade in this course will be based on the five exams (70%) and your homework (30%). Final Words: Physics is not an easy subject for most students, in particular for those who did not take Physics in High School and/or are lacking basic Math skills. Physics is not Math though. Math is the "language" exact sciences such as Physics, Chemistry, Engineering etc speak. Learning Math "language" is a subject of other classes and not of PHY130. PHY130 will definitely help you practice and so improve further certain Math skills. However, due to time constraints,we may not dwell much on Math technicalities in class. Furthermore, you may find PHY130 to be particularly fast paced. This is necessary because we have to cover Chapters 1 to 14 of the text. Also, please, take into account that: Calendar: Below is a Calendar of the material we will cover on-line, homework due dates, and exam dates. All exam and homework due dates are firm.
