Predicting
Spatial Distribution and Relative Abundance of Bobcats in the
Northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan
(2002-2005)

Bobcats are an important harvested furbearer species in Michigan.
Unfortunately, little research has been conducted on the spatial
ecology and habitat distribution in the state. Our
study was conducted in a region of the northern Lower Peninsula
of Michigan that is open to bobcat harvesting. Our research addressed
the following needs for harvested populations: 1) estimation of bobcat
abundance in Michigan; 2) spatial models of bobcat distribution; and 3)
identification of suitable bobcat habitat in Michigan. This study was
funded by CMU, Defenders of Wildlife, Wildlife Forever, CITGO, and
Merit Energy Company.
