Where can I find general information about Optional Practical Training (OPT) and Curricular Practical Training (CPT)?
Visit the Office of Global Engagement (OGE) website. You can also schedule an appointment with their international student advisors for guidance.
How do I get approval for OPT?
- You must apply for OPT directly through USCIS.
- One of the requirements is a recommendation from your academic program.
- To obtain the recommendation:
- Ensure satisfactory progress toward graduation.
- Apply for graduation through the degree progress system.
- Submit an OPT request via the OGE portal.
- Enter the information of the Computer Science OPT/CPT advisor. The system will automatically send your request for review.
- Make sure you have applied for graduation before submitting your OPT request.
How do I get approval for CPT?
- Secure a job offer:
- The offer letter must include the position, job description/duties, start and end dates, work location, and hours per week.
- Forward this letter to your OPT/CPT advisor.
- Enroll in a credit-bearing internship course:
- Examples: CPS 695 (1 credit hour, graduate students) or CPS 395 (3 credit hours, undergraduate students).
- Contact the department office for course registration.
- Note: Internship credits do not count toward graduation requirements, as internships are optional.
- Ensure the internship start and end dates align with the course schedule. You cannot work before or after these dates.
- Submit a CPT request via the OGE portal:
- Include the OPT/CPT advisor’s contact information.
- The advisor will review and approve (or deny) your request.
- You will receive an email notification once a decision is made.
- Follow up with OGE for final approval (e.g., updated I-20).
When and how will I know if my OPT/CPT is approved or denied?
Requests are typically reviewed within 48 business hours by the Computer Science OPT/CPT advisor. If you do not receive a response, it generally means your request is approved. Follow up with OGE after 2-3 business days to complete the process (e.g., I-20 update or USCIS submission). If your request is denied, you will be notified by the advisor.
Am I eligible for CPT?
You are eligible for CPT after completing at least two semesters (excluding summer).
Is CPT mandatory?
No, like OPT, CPT is entirely optional.
How many hours can I work?
Up to 40 hours per week during the summer (if you are not taking classes) and up to 20 hours per week during the academic semester.
Where can I work?
During the summer (if not attending in-person classes on campus), you may work in-person anywhere in the U.S. If attending in-person classes, only remote work is allowed unless the work location is in Mount Pleasant.
Will my CPT request be approved?
CPT approvals are case-by-case and not guaranteed. Factors considered include:
- Academic performance.
- Course load.
- Nature and location of the job.
CPT is usually approved for summer only if no coursework is taken. If you are taking more than three graduate courses (full load), approval is unlikely. In some cases, CPT may be approved during your final semester if only thesis or research work remains.
When should I apply for OPT/CPT?
- OPT: Apply at least three months in advance, as USCIS processing can take time.
- CPT: Apply at least three weeks in advance, as it is handled internally at CMU.
Will CPT affect my OPT?
CPT will not affect your OPT eligibility unless you accumulate one full year of CPT, in which case you lose OPT eligibility.
Can I extend my CPT?
No, you must apply for a new CPT for each semester.
