Dr. Qi Liao is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Central Michigan University (CMU). He received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) from the University of Notre Dame, Indiana. He graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. and departmental distinction in Computer Science from Hartwick College, New York, with a minor concentration in Mathematics. He was named Hartwick College Faculty Scholar, and received best graduate teaching assistant award at Notre Dame. He was inducted as lifetime members into National Mathematics Honor Society (Kappa Mu Epsilon), International Honor Society for the Computing and Information Disciplines (Upsilon Pi Epsilon), and the Engineering Honor Society (Tau Beta Pi).

Dr. Liao’s research interests include computer security, anomaly detection, visual analytics, big data mining, and economics / game theory at the intersection of network usage and cybersecurity. He has published over seventy peer-reviewed papers in journals and conference proceedings, book chapters, and technical reports. Dr. Liao received awards including USENIX best paper award at LISA, IEEE best session paper at ICCCBDA, Emerald Literati Awards for Excellence-Outstanding Paper for Information and Computer Security, IEEE Visual Analytics Science and Technology (VAST) Challenge Award, 2nd place in National Security Innovation Competition at Colorado Springs, and Notre Dame Center for Research Computing Award for Computational Sciences and Visualization. Dr. Liao was nominated for the Provost's Award for Outstanding Research and Creative Activity at CMU, and received the 2015 College of Science & Technology (CST) Award for Outstanding Research.

Dr. Liao has taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses, ranging from programming (Java, C, Python, etc.), data structures, networking and system administration, to computer security. He has extensive experience in classroom teaching, course curriculum development, lab design and innovation.

Dr. Liao has served on NSF review panels (SaTC CORE and EDU), international conference co-chairs, technical program committees, journal editorial boards and numerous peer reviewers. Dr. Liao was the 2014 American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Fellow to conduct sponsored research at the United States Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL).  Dr. Liao was a visiting scientist in the Visual Analytics Division at IBM Research in 2010, and guest research faculty in the Global Security Sciences Division at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) in 2018.
